Web 2.0 and Social Media

We've all heard the buzz words: social media, web 2.0, social networking, collaborative tools. At Learning Anorak, we are well versed in the use of these tools for learning. In fact, Karyn has conducted extensive research into the subject and is an acknowledged aficionado. Her research project can be found here.

In the light of this, we inhabit a wide range of social media spaces and can advise on their suitability for workplace learning. You may be astonished to discover what is out there to be used - free, gratis and for nothing!

One significant advantage of the use of social media for learning is the ability for an individual to access learning at his/her desk at the point of need. No long delays waiting for a course to run (only for it to be cancelled), no travel costs, no expensive development.

Where organisations have chosen to leverage the power of the network for informal learning (whether this has been restricted to an internal network or opened out to include the global village) individuals have taken greater control of their own learning. There has been a sharp increase in the use of collaborative tools for mutual instruction and a sharing of knowledge via free resources such as wikis, blogs, discussion forums, FAQs and so on.
